Pet insurance is hard to compare, and a guide is only useful if you can tell where its information comes from. This page explains how Your Pet Secure puts its guides together, what we can and cannot tell you, and how the site is run.
Where our information comes from
Our guides are built from published, checkable sources. We do not run our own lab tests or secret-shopper studies, and we do not present ourselves as if we did. The sources we rely on most are:
- Insurers’ own documents: sample policies, coverage pages, terms and conditions, and published waiting periods, limits and exclusions.
- Regulators and industry bodies: state insurance departments and organizations such as the NAIC and NAPHIA.
- Veterinary sources: veterinary schools, veterinary associations and animal welfare organizations, for health and cost information.
- Independent rankings and surveys: where several reputable outlets have compared providers, we report what they found and say who found it.
When we state a figure, a rule or a ranking, we link to the source so you can check it yourself.
How we compare insurers
No single provider is best for every pet. Instead of naming one winner, our comparisons look at the factors that change what you actually pay and receive:
- What is covered and what is excluded
- Annual, per-incident and lifetime limits
- Deductibles and reimbursement rates
- Waiting periods and pre-existing condition rules
- Price ranges and available discounts
- How claims are filed and how quickly they are typically paid
Where sources disagree, we say so. Prices in our guides are examples or ranges taken from published data. Your own quote depends on your pet’s species, breed and age, and on where you live.
No affiliate links, no paid placements
Your Pet Secure is an independent site and currently has no outside funding: no advertising, no sponsors and no affiliate income. Your Pet Secure does not use affiliate links and does not earn a commission when you buy a policy. Insurers cannot pay to be included, ranked higher or described more favorably. When we link to an insurer or any other website, it is only so you can verify the information.
Keeping guides up to date
Insurance terms, prices and state rules change. We revise guides when we learn that the underlying information has changed. Always confirm the details in the current policy documents before you buy, because the policy is what counts if you ever need to claim.
What our guides are not
Our content is general information for pet owners in the United States. It is not insurance, financial, legal or veterinary advice, and it cannot take your individual circumstances into account. For a health concern, speak to a veterinarian. For a question about a specific policy, ask the insurer or a licensed insurance professional.
Corrections
If you spot something that is wrong or out of date, please tell us through our contact page. We check every report and correct the guide when the report is right.
